Ooh, shiny! Jing tsai, da bianhua!*

Category: BittersweetMistress Rows @ 11:49 pm

The last of the most recent yarn goes up tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m., most of it’s already listed! If there’s something you liked in the photo-montage from earlier this week, now might be a good time to pick it up. Think of it as color therapy for the winter doldrums. Now if only you could get your doctor to write you a script, you’d never have to feel guilty about your yarn purchases again!

In other good news, I got my stockpots in the mail, only two days after I ordered them. Now that’s some fan-damn-tastic free shipping! Boscovs gets points for that. Not as much fun? The fact that they didn’t list the pots as being 2nds. None of the flaws makes them unusable for my purposes, but still, you’d think in the interest of full disclosure. For $10, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, I’m just happy to have them. It makes me wonder about the other items on their closeout site though.

Also in Bittersweet news, I’ve set up a business page on Facebook. If you’re on FB, and you’d like to show your support for the shop, please consider becoming a fan of Bittersweet Woolery? I’ve linked my Artfire shop right into the page, and soon will be moving away from Etsy all together aside from a few odds and ends. Artfire just offers so much more in terms of flexibility and offsite extras (FB kiosk, sticky cart, discount codes, etc.). I love Etsy, and I’ve been with them in one form or another since they were less than a year old, but they simply haven’t responded to the changing needs of their vendors the way that Artfire has from the get go.

Coming in the future? A Bittersweet Woolery site of its own, complete with onsite vending and its own mini-blog. If I can figure out a way to keep it connected in some way to Rows Red, I will. No matter what happens, don’t think for a minute that Rows Red is going anywhere. I love this blog, and what I’ve built here. I can grow the Woolery and keep my blabbermouth ways, of that I am sure.

*Points to whomever can tell me where those quotes come from. Steve, you can’t play, you’d know right away.

**Extra points to whomever can also tell me what the second part translates to, and yes, you can look it up in an appropriate fan resource!

Romney Romance, Chapter 1

Category: Plans,SpinningMistress Rows @ 3:24 pm

Let me tell you a love story. It starts on a farm far away from my home, and it ends in a trash bag. Somewhere there is a sheep I’ve never met, grazing in fields I’ll never walk myself, who gave me a gift that I am beyond thrilled with. How could it guess that, after an ignominious clip, that its now forgotten fleece would make its way into my waiting and willing arms? Newly shorn and naked; sunlight, sweet grass, and the company of its herd were far more enticing thoughts than the love of a passionate spinner and dyer. All things considered, it’s probably for the best that way, don’t you think?

Romney ram, borrowed from Wikipedia.

Romney ram, borrowed from Wikipedia.

I adore Romney. It is tied with Blue Faced Leicester for the throne in my spinner’s heart, and both have their charms. Romney has a sheen to it, and a beautiful crimp, both of which delight me to no end. I learned to enjoy working with it when I hand carded and spun the warp for last year’s Fleece to Shawl at Rhinebeck. I fell in love with it when I dyed locks in shades of fire and autumn leaves for the weft. I swear, by all that is holy and covered in chocolate, the colors fairly glowed on the fiber. I couldn’t believe that a breed often passed over by my comrades was actually so lovely.

Going into Rhinebeck there was only one thing on my “must have” list, and that was a clean, light or medium grey Romney fleece… and it had to be affordable. As fate would have it, I found a fleece that met all those criteria (and then some) at the same booth I bought the Dark Star roving from last year, Triple R Farm. My friend Becky, who used to work in a fiber mill, looked the fleece over and gave it a thumbs up. When I went to check out with the 5lb fleece and a side order of roving, the wife told her husband to only charge me for 3lbs. So, I bought a beautiful 5lb fleece for $24. Yes, only $24.

What a fleece looks like, all spread out.

What a fleece looks like, all spread out.

When I brought it home after percolating in Becky’s car for an afternoon, I found that condensation had dampened the fleece. There was no way I could just tie the bag closed and store it until a far away day when I felt like washing it, my beautiful fleece would have molded by then. I really did have to wash it, and quickly. I spread the fleece out in the living room so it could start to air out, grabbed my sole remaining lingerie bag, and got to work.

Raw locks, ready to wash.

Raw locks, ready to wash.

The fleece was so clean that I was able to set up a three-soak system, start to finish. Fortunately the hot water for our apartment is supernova scalding, which is fantastic for washing fleeces. I would add some Dawn to a wash tub, run the water til it was smoking hot and pop my bag of fleece in there to soak. The first water dump was amber colored and smelled like a barn. The second soapy soak was barely tinted at all. The third soak, clear water only, dumped out crystal clear. Due to the weather being cold and damp, I could only do two batches a night, dried atop our radiators. Even so, I was able to knock out that fleece in exactly one week.

Please ignore our battered bathroom floor (and poor lighting). It's actually clean, really.

As each batch dried and I picked through it to check on cleanliness and how much (if any) VM was present, I was continually awed by the fleece. The locks were so luscious, the crimp so modestly wavy and plump. I wasn’t the only one that was amazed at how silky the washed locks were. This was only my second time washing a fleece, and to say I was thrilled - not only that I didn’t ruin it, but that it was so easy and fun – would be an understatement.

The first soak is always the most dramatic.

The first soak is always the most dramatic.

Colors in this fleece ranged from creamy sand to silver and pewter greys. Only rarely did I find a stalk or plant head to pull out. There were a few spots where the locks were tough and the VM embedded, those areas seemed to be clearly belly or leg section. All in all, I threw out two handfuls of fiber I thought unfit. The rest of the fleece is wonderful, and begging to be used.

Cleaned locks.

Cleaned locks.

Now I’ve got a big white trash bag full to the brim with woolly goodness. What to do with over 3 lbs of soft locks? Oh honey, I have dye and a drumcarder, and I’m not afraid to use them. I could commit myself to a sweater that I ,designed dyed, carded, spun, and knit myself, but I fear I won’t have the fortitude to see it through. Smaller projects though… that I can see happening. I have visions of dye runs dancing in my head. Small batches of scarlet, garnet, and old rose – a hat and scarf combo. Dark sapphire, grey blue, and denim – a shawl. Pine green, sage, and redwood brown – a pair of socks. Once the three colors are carded together the resulting heathered batts and yarn would be far more beautiful than the individual contributing colors, and a joy to create.

Clean lcoks, mostly 5" in length like the ones on the right, and some darker, shorter locks.

Oh happy day, oh dreamy sigh! I can hardly wait to see where this Romney romance takes me because truthfully, I am helplessly in love with this fleece.

Tour de Fleece: Day One

Category: Plans,SpinningMistress Rows @ 5:55 pm

So, unlike last year, I most certainly AM participating in the Tour de Fleece. For those not in the know, it’s a personal challenge event where you spin every day of the Tour de France. Don’t ask, fiber folk are lovely but odd. So, you set your own personal goal and do your best to meet it by the end of the race. I have joined Team CrankyPants, which fits my fluctuating mood lately, all stressors accounted for. Besides, I get to be in good company there.

Color me cranky.

Color me cranky.

My goal is to “finish”. I will spin nothing new, but instead finish old things. I am counting my current spinning, Kryptonite from Cris at Into the Whirled since it’s a project I’ve already started. So, in the spirit of my goal, I will finish this, the second bobbin, and then ply. That’s going to take a long time, that plying.

Mmm... floofy.

Mmm... floofy.

About halfway full.

About halfway full.

Then I will finish the bobbin of Jessica’s top (Jackson Pollack?) that I started at SOAR of 2008. Yeah, that was October of last year. After that I’ll empty the two full bobbins from two other projects I have laying around, either by winding off as a single, plying it on itself, or spinning up a matching bobbin and THEN plying.

Wow, that's more blue than I realized at first.

Wow, that's more blue than I realized at first.

If I manage to do all that, I have an untouched 8oz bag of subtle grey and blue roving from Jehovah Jireh Mill that I’ve had for at least a year and not spun a bit of. I don’t know as I’ll get that far considering I still need to devote considerable time to mom’s shawl if I’m going to have it done in time for WOOL, but I’m going to do my best.

Oh, and if I finish all of THAT… there’s still tons of batts I bought at Rhinebeck ’07 and ’08 from Spinner’s Hill…

Tomorrow: BIG post about WOOL and what guests can expect. We’re almost 1 month away!

Monday of Fiery Doom

Category: Life & Stuff,Loot,PlansMistress Rows @ 4:46 pm

Today started out, let’s just say… freakishly awful. I opened up my brand new bottle of whitening-mouthwash and once the cap came off the bottle squished in my grip. This sent a huge splash of antiseptic AND hydrogen peroxide laced liquid up my nose. Yes. Up my nose. The strangled choking quickly got my poor, sick husband off the couch, rubbing my back and I tried not to breath in or out. The burning was intense, delicate mucous membranes screaming in agony. Note to self: call company and explain how squishy bottles of fiery liquid near your face is a bad thing.

Then (if Steve weren’t home sick) I’d have locked my keys in the house, a fact I didn’t realize till I’d gone down to the car. Thankfully, he was home to throw them off the balcony to me.

I am pathetically grateful that my day improved exponentially from there. Really, how could it not? Truly though, today was awesome as I got shine at work with a special project and I got my dental-reward Knit Picks package in the mail. Inside we find Sock Innovation (tentative win, yay for 40% off), two skeins of candyliscious Felici in Alexandrite, and my big splurge, the Sipalu Bag Kit in the Cool colorway. It was really, really hard to choose between the blue and the Autumn colored Warm one, not so hard to dismiss the pinkish Tranquil. Having never touched or seen Palette before I can say with all honesty that it is lovely. Soft, squishy, and the colors are just gorgeous. I especially love the heathered colors, wow. I have been wistfully lusting after this pattern/kit for a long time. I can do this.

After I finish my grandmother’s shawl and my Tilt sweater, this is next on my list. That’ll mean I’ll have my mom’s wedding shawl (epic project) and the bag… stranded colorwork being new and slightly intimidating to me. I’d better throw a simple sock in there for mental relief.

So, like I said, much improved. Life is occasionally kind and doesn’t kick you when you’re down.

Don’t think I’m not looking over my shoulder though.

Groundwork

Category: Life & Stuff,PlansMistress Rows @ 2:28 pm

It may sound overly critical, but I really suck at the follow-through. I always say, “long on planning, short on follow-through”. It’s not that I don’t want to, but either I get overwhelmed, or distracted… you know how it goes. To counteract that I set certain boundaries and measures in place to help overcome my nature. I may not be able to ever rid myself of the flaw, but I can damn well try to work around it.

One of the things I set out on paper to do with this blog is make it a blend of personal content and fiber culture. Things like reviews of books, websites and products. Sharing new finds, be it a great blog or a good sale. Writing up guides for first time festivalgoers… all manner of things. If I end up posting 6-8 times a month, which isn’t terribly hard for me, I want almost 1/3 or more of those to be about something other than “this is what I’m up to right now”. Not because I think there’s anything wrong with my personal posts, but because I like semi-regular features, especially reviews, and it’s not like I’m shy about sharing my opinions. I’ve worked out a ratings system to go along with my longer write-ups, you can see them on the Reviews tab.

What’s my workaround to make all this actually happen? I’m pre-writing these themed posts when bored  and saving them as drafts. I already have several ready to go! Duh, I know, but it’s the simple things that elude us sometimes.

Hand in hand with all this will be events. The Hudson River Knit & Spin, now the Hudson River Stitch & Spin, and WOOL will stay the same, but I will be working hard to get attendance up. WOOL was an amazing success this year, proportional to the size of the venue, and I hope to continue with that. The S&S drew in some wonderful people from out of town (and the local crowd), but there were really only a handful people that I didn’t know. I’d like to see more new faces. I’m cutting myself slack in that it was the first year, and very hot, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work to improve. The big thing will be getting the word out, and I’ll ask for your help with that too.

This word just in, sometime this weekend I’ll be announcing a brand new winter event! Unfortunately not the getaway that WOOL attendees asked for, especially not in this economy. Still, it will be something to take the edge off and get us all together during the blah winter season. It’s months and months until the first show in April, and I don’t know about you but I need me a fiber-freak fix!

A Rose by Another Name

Category: Life & Stuff,PlansMistress Rows @ 12:01 am

Don’t mind the looks, I know the new digs are kind sparse in the pretty department. It’ll take some time, but have no fear that there is a cohesive “look” in store for the new ‘site’. But enough of the fluttering hands and apologies… welcome! Thanks for dropping by.

Anyone who has followed me over from the Phoenix Fiberworks blog knows why I’ve made this change. Anyone new to the show can read about that there. No big drama, really, just time to move on and focus on things that are both exciting and moving in a direction that has plenty of positive connotations for me. As always, I’m buzzing with ideas, but even better is the fact that these are ideas I have the resources to accomplish. My Etsy shop is closed, I’ll make an announcement if that changes at any time.

It’s kinda nice, starting over in a way, and especially wonderful that Ravelry lets you change your username with the click of a button. Go Casey and Jess! I will be RowsRed there, and I won’t change my user name for a while so that it’ll help with recognition issues. Please remember to add this new feed and delete the old, and please let me know if you notice it’s having trouble updating. Steve and I are learning as we go here.

So, why Rows Red? Well, there are several emotional draws here. Snow White & Rose Red was a fairy tale that I enjoyed reading as a child. I grew up reading the “good stuff”, meaning the originals, not the Disney versions. Rose Red is also the best Stephen King horror movie ever made. Once a year or so Steve and I will sit down for a marathon viewing and it hasn’t lost anything yet, even after all this time. Rose Red also has visual pull for me, my favorite flowers are Black Magic and Black Baccara roses. Both are just gorgeous, in a decadent and slightly sinister way. Red roses stand for passion, and iridescent black roses have just the right amount of dark passion as far as I’m concerned. And lastly, spelled this way I was not only guaranteed a domain and user name anywhere I went, but I get to imply needle-arts and weaving, AND I get to be a little punny too! I blame it on my husband, he’s rubbing off on me.

I’m excited about the move and the redirection of energy. Even though my personal posts won’t change, other than catching up on a lot of projects and spinning, it will be fun to see what other directions I can explore. I’ll still be doing all the events I’ve done in the past, WOOL and the Hudson River Stitch & Spin aren’t going anywhere. I am exploring a winter weekend idea, but I know that money is tight for everyone. We’ll see how it works out as things get more settled down after the holidays. All in all, good times ahead, I hope.
